The Woman Behind the Face

The Admiral herself, Grace Hopper, left an indelible mark on the science of programming. One of the first programmers, she developed the first compiler program. She also created theories that led to programming languages that are not specific to the machine they worked on.

Her compiler program was such a leap for the field that her contemporaries didn’t really believe it worked, or could even exist. "Nobody believed," Grace said. "I had a running compiler, and nobody would touch it. They told me computers could only do arithmetic." We think she was one bad-ass lady and couldn't have released the Code Offsets without featuring her on one of the bills.
