Most of today's software is dependent on 3rd party components, which is why many organizations choose to use a tool like ProGet to manage their repositories. But when your code is coming from an outside source, you also need to ensure that all of the code introduced into your software, isn't also introducing security risks.

As mentioned in my previous post , multi-site replication is the mirroring of feeds across multiple ProGet instances. Many of our ProGet Enterprise users have a scenario that requires common components, yet their instances are in different geographic locations. Recently, one of our users described their set up of replication, and how, although not geographically dispersed, they still found a huge benefit from implementing replication.

Software Package Managers (NuGet, Maven, Bower, npm, etc.) are an established concept, and many enterprises use Universal Package Managers like ProGet to manage and coordinate how these packages are used in the software development process. Many enterprises are global organizations that have separate functioning business units that require common packages; this is where multi-site feed replication comes in.

As you may already know, our tool ProGet started as a powerful NuGet server. From its inception, ProGet has always had strong enterprise support for .NET development and, with the latest version, it’s grown into a full-blown Universal Package Manager with more and more feed type such as npm, bower, maven, etc. For those of you familiar with ProGet you’ve likely heard of another, similar tool NuGet Server.

Software Package Managers (NuGet, Maven, Bower, npm, etc) are a pretty established concept, and there are a lot of reasons why organizations would want a private repository. SimpleTalk's Taking NuGet to the Enterprise identifies a lot of these reasons in detail, but licensing is often the most overlooked, and one of the biggest gotchas.

Since ProGet supports silent installation, it is pretty straightforward to automatically deploy it as part of a script. However, it is also possible to use the SQL API to add some standard initial configuration.

This February ProGet celebrated its first birthday, today we are excited for yet another milestone, ProGet 2.0. If you haven't heard about ProGet, it is a NuGet server that can function as an independent tool, or side by side with NuGet. ProGet differentiates itself from other NuGet servers by offering additional flexibility, especially for managing enterprise dependencies. These differences are primarily seen with additional feature functionality in areas like; authentication, access controls, and auditing. We have had great feedback from our users over this past year, and the changes introduced to ProGet 2.0 and before are driven by this dialogue. One thing is still the same about ProGet though, the price, just like always ProGet is free to license.

April 25, 2014 - While these tools were never officially supported, the ProGet Client Tools are being officially removed due to extreme lack of demand. We will still offer the ProGet.exe tool for automated deployment and testing scenarios, but will only support its use in conjunction with a valid BuildMaster license.
